To celebrate the launch of our new cake-orientated TV advert (you can watch it here if you haven’t seen it yet), we decided to host our very own bake-off with ten of the UK’s top food, travel, lifestyle & parenting bloggers. Also attending the event were two L&C competition winners and two lucky L&C staff members. Hosted at the wonderful Cookery School on Little Portland Street in London, we invited our fourteen attendees to join us on a cold March morning for some baking fun and some light competition.
The Event
First, the bloggers were treated to a selection of freshly-baked scones made just that morning by the Cookery School team. Then all participants were briefed by chef Rosalind on the details of the Piece of Cake bake-off: the team that could bake the best house cake would be crowned the winners!
Cakes would be awarded points for the following areas:• Quality of sponge (most important)• Icing design & cake decoration• Teamwork• Enthusiasm• Time of delivery (earliest cake to be delivered gets the most points)Then all of our participants were divided randomly into 7 teams...
The Teams
Jenny of Midwife and Life and Jaillan of Savior There
Kathy & Lotty of Lotty Earns
Deborah of Country Heart & Home and Jess
Jacinta and Emma Drew
Stephanie of Merry Musings and Sarah of Extraordinary Chaos
Anita & Karen of Mad House of Cats & Babies
Laura of Dear Bear and Beany and AlisonParticipants were provided all the key ingredients (freshly laid farm eggs, organic flour and butter) and a simple sponge recipe to work from. Other than that, they had to design the cake by themselves with only light instruction and guidance from the experts at the Cookery School.
The bakers then had to select their toppings from a large range of icing and decoration options… all edible and utterly delicious of course!
The winning cake goes to…
…Deborah of Country Heart & Home and our competition winner Jess, with their pink princess castle cake. While the judges were keen to stress that they were bowled over by all 7 of the cakes made in the class, they were particularly impressed with Deborah & Jess’s design & sponge! Well done Doborah & Jess!
